3D vs 4D vs Standard Number Plates: Which Should You Choose?

If you're ordering new number plates for the first time in a while, you've probably noticed there are more options than there used to be: standard flat plates, 3D gel plates, and 4D acrylic plates. They all look similar in a thumbnail photo, but up close — and on the road — the differences are real. Here's what actually sets them apart.

Standard (2D) plates

This is the classic flat, printed plate most cars have worn for decades. The characters are printed directly onto the plate rather than raised. They're the cheapest option, fully DVLA approved and road legal, and the safest choice if you just want a straightforward, compliant plate without spending extra on finish.

3D gel plates

3D plates use a resin gel domed over the printed characters, giving the digits a raised, glossy look without the full depth of an acrylic letter. They catch the light differently to a flat plate and give a noticeably more premium finish for a modest price increase. If you want something that looks a step up from standard but don't want to pay for full acrylic letters, 3D gel plates are the middle ground.

4D acrylic plates

4D plates use individual laser-cut acrylic characters bonded onto the plate, giving real, tactile depth — you can feel the raised edge of each digit with your finger. They're the most premium-looking option and hold up well over time since the acrylic is weather-resistant. If you want plates that stand out and look genuinely custom, 4D acrylic plates are the option most people mean when they say "raised" plates.

Are 3D and 4D plates road legal?

Yes — as long as they meet the same DVLA requirements as any other plate: correct font, spacing, size, and a visible manufacturer/supplier mark. All of PlatePlug's standard, 3D and 4D plates are made to these specifications and are 100% road legal in the UK. The style only changes the finish, not the compliance.

Which one should you pick?

If budget is the main factor, go standard — it's fully compliant and the cheapest way to get a fresh, legal plate. If you want a noticeably better finish without paying full price for raised letters, 3D gel is a strong middle option. If you want the most premium, tactile look and don't mind paying a bit more, 4D acrylic is the one to choose.
