Gel vs Acrylic Number Plates: Which Material Lasts Longer?
Share
Style aside, one of the most common questions we get is simple: which lasts longer, gel or acrylic? Both are built to handle UK weather, but they age differently — here's what to actually expect over a few years of daily driving.
How 3D gel plates hold up
The resin gel dome on a 3D plate is UV-stabilised and bonded directly over the printed characters, so it resists yellowing and cracking far better than older-style gel finishes did. It's also naturally water-resistant since there's no separate raised piece that water can sit under. Most drivers get several years of daily use with no visible degradation.
How 4D acrylic plates hold up
The laser-cut acrylic characters on a 4D plate are individually bonded on with a permanent adhesive. Acrylic itself is highly weather-resistant and doesn't fade in sunlight the way some plastics do, so the raised characters keep their sharp black finish for a long time. The main thing to watch is impact rather than weather — a hard knock (e.g. reversing into a low kerb) can chip an individual acrylic letter, whereas a gel-domed plate tends to flex slightly rather than chip.
What about washing and jet washes?
Both finishes are safe with normal car washing, including most jet washes at a reasonable distance. We'd avoid holding a jet wash nozzle directly against the edge of any raised character at close range on either finish, just as a general precaution — not because it's fragile, but because concentrated pressure on any bonded edge over years of repeated use will eventually wear faster than normal washing.
So which should you choose for longevity?
If your car lives mostly on the road and you want the lowest risk of any chipping, 3D gel is the more forgiving option day-to-day. If you want the sharpest, most premium look and are reasonably careful around low obstacles, 4D acrylic will hold that finish for years. Either way, both are a significant step up from a standard flat plate in terms of finish and durability.
