How to Order Custom Number Plates Online: A Step-by-Step Guide
Share
Ordering number plates online is quick, but a few small mistakes — wrong spacing, missing documents, picking the wrong placement — are the most common reasons an order gets delayed. Here's how to get it right the first time.
1. Have your registration and proof of entitlement ready
UK sellers are legally required to verify you're entitled to the registration before producing a plate. Typically this means having your V5C logbook (or new keeper slip) to hand, since you'll usually need to confirm the details it shows.
2. Decide on placement
Most drivers need both a front (white) and rear (yellow) plate, but you can order just one if only one needs replacing — useful if you've had a single plate damaged or stolen.
3. Enter your registration exactly as you want it spaced
This is the step most people get wrong. Whatever spacing you type into the plate designer is exactly what gets manufactured — we don't auto-correct it, since some registrations have specific, deliberate spacing. Double check it against your V5C before confirming.
4. Choose your style
Standard, 3D gel, or 4D acrylic — purely a finish choice, all fully road legal. Add a border or badge if you want, both optional and within DVLA limits. If you're not sure which finish suits you, our plate style comparison guide breaks down the differences.
5. Check the legal text option
You can choose whether to include the small legal text line on the plate. Some drivers prefer it minimal; it doesn't affect road legality either way, it's a display preference.
6. Place your order
Orders placed before 4PM on a working day are dispatched same-day. You'll get tracking details by email once it ships, and most UK addresses receive plates within 1–2 working days of dispatch.
